Our Services
Occupational Therapy
Glenwood's Occupational Therapy staff works with people of all ages who, because of some decline in function, need specialized assistance to lead independent, productive lives. Reasons for functional decline vary but may include: stroke, hip or knee replacements, fractured bones, heart or lung conditions, major surgery, or other debilitating diseases.
Occupational Therapy (OT)
Occupational therapy helps patients regain skills needed for daily living through the implementation of ideas and making adjustments to their environment and routine. Ideas may include: button-hooks to enable you to fasten clothing, use of 'reachers' for grabbing, use of long-handled sponges for bathing, physical adjustments to your home setting, and many more. Our OT gym has everything needed to perform a variety of exercises that can simulate activities performed in the home. Some treatments or activities you might be involved in are listed below.
Activities of Daily Living Treatments (ADLs)
Instruction is provided to improve self-care (dressing, bathing, cooking, grooming, toileting, etc.) and mobility performance. Our occupational therapy team will provide recommendations and training to use adaptive equipment for accommodating lost function (e.g., reachers, sock aides, shoe horn, bathtub bench, etc.).
Therapeutic Activities
Therapeutic activities are used to increase tolerance to activity (conditioning), to improve motor control, and to increase strength and balance. This combined approach to therapy improves your function in all tasks. Some activities that you may be asked to do include: ergometer (hand bicycle used to improve upper body strength and conditioning), rickshaw (weight machine to increase upper body strength), craft and woodworking activities, standing activities, etceteras.
Cognitive Training
Cognitive training improves mentation (thought process) skills for activities of daily living. Some activities you may be asked to do include: balancing a check book, making correct change, identifying common shapes and colors, respond to emergency situations in the home environment, and meal planning.
Pool therapy
The general aims of pool therapy are to promote patient relaxation, restore mobility, strengthen muscles, improve balance, improve motor control, and increase tolerance to activity.
Neuromuscular Re-education
Neuromuscular re-education activities re-establish functional movement patterns. By focusing on routine tasks, these exercises can help rebuild muscle memory and help make everyday tasks easier.
